I have experienced burnout in my life than I can count. The only good thing about going through them is I have figured out ways to get out of a rut and what it takes to feel inspired again. Now, I want to share what I’ve learned with you.
It started in high school.
I had classes that you could not lollygag and skip your way through without a care, without failing.
I wanted to be a nurse in those days, and I started chasing that dream in 11th grade where I went to a career tech school and got a small taste of college, then actually went on to college.
That was when I think it really became an ingrained habit: “How I feel doesn’t matter. I have to do it. There’s no time for ____________. I don’t have time to sleep; I have to study” and worse.
What happened was I trained myself to believe that I was not a priority and that all I had time to do was study and do homework.
There are two reasons I’ve taken a liking to writing about self care and self love.
Firstly, because I saw a trend in myself: for a long time, I never made it on my list of priorities.
Then when I experienced burnout as a result of overworking myself and not taking time to rest, I tried to muscle through instead of asking myself, “What’s going on? How can I get help? What do I need? How do I get out of this rut?”
I was lucky to come in last place. Then after I had kids, I didn’t even make the list.
Secondly, I saw this trend in nearly everyone around me, as well. It’s time we change our narrative friends, because you, reading this, you matter.
You are important to your people, but you are small in the scheme of things. And that’s supposed to be encouraging, because the thing is, the world will keep turning and the sun will still rise tomorrow if you take time to acknowledge that you matter, too.
I’ve experienced burnout more times than I can count in my life. But the good thing about going through a rut a few times a year is that you learn how to get through it.

23 Fun Ways To Get Out Of A Rut And Feel Inspired Again
1) Make a list of things you’re thankful for.
Not your kids and family and house, think about the small things.
2) Pick a new project and plan it out in detail.
Then do it.
3) Do something you’ve always wanted to do.
4) Read “More than a bucket list” by Toni Birdsong.
5) Find something that inspires you or that you’re passionate about.
6) Learn a new skill or hobby, or rekindle an old one.

7) Reconnect with an old friend.
8) Get out of the house.
This is crucial to getting through a rut if you’re a stay at home mama! I have gone literally weeks without leaving my house, and after a while, it starts to feel overwhelming.
House air is not as good as outside air. Even if you walk down the road, it will help you to see something beyond your nest. You have to remember that life exists beyond those four walls, and the only way to do that is by being outside of it.
9) Buy yourself a small treat.
And take time to really enjoy it.
10) Get some sunshine.
Sunshine always makes me feel better! If it just isn’t happening right now because of weather or where you live, a cool loophole is to take good quality vitamin D drops to make sure you don’t have a Vitamin D deficiency.
11) Break your routine.
Shake something up about your daily life. Even as small as the route you drive all the time or the meals you eat. Change is good.
12) Plan out a trip or a you day.
This doesn’t even have to be elaborate or expensive! I love just going to a coffee shop alone on a Saturday morning, getting an iced latte and reading for a while or walking around Target sniffing candles.
It’s amazing what a little time alone can do for your mental state, even if you spend zero dollars and your time is spent doing basically nothing. Sometimes doing nothing is good for the soul.
13) Write a bucket list.
And check something off of it!
14) Change something.
This can be as big or as small as you want it to be, but change is integral to breaking out of a rut.
Here are small, easy changes that have helped me:
- Changing my hair
- Redecorating a space
- Rearranging the furniture
- Changing the routes I drive often
- Switching up something about my routine
- Choosing some meals we haven’t tried for our meal plan
- Painting my nails
- Changing my phone theme or background
- Changing how I do my make up
- Getting a few new shirts
- Organizing my drawers
- Listening to new music
15) Do something new.
Go to a new place. Try something new like pottery, yoga, archery, a cooking class or aerial dance! Go to a new restaurant you’ve been wanting to. Explore somewhere you’ve never been (no maps). The options are literally limitless!
16) Recognize that nearly everything is a season.
Good or bad, nearly everything passes or changes eventually. If you’re struggling, take comfort in the fact that it won’t be this way forever.
17) Create or change up your morning and evening routines.
This is something new I started about last 6 months ago, and I love it! Having a morning and evening routine start and end your day on good notes and prepare you for the day ahead.
They’re like the perfect bookends to your day and something about it makes you feel like you have it together.
18) Do some yoga.

I love Adriene because she’s fun, funny, light-hearted, easy to follow, and she doesn’t make you feel like you’re doing it “wrong”. I’ve tried following different guides, and I always come back to her!
19) Prioritize weekly you time and allow yourself to rest.
I’ve been having Hannah time on Friday or Saturday night. Joey puts the kids to bed, I take a hot shower, do a scrub, light a candle, do a face mask, and read a book.
It’s amazing how something that small can make such a difference! I always look forward to it and feel so good after because self care matters.
Making the time to slow down and rest will help you get through this rut. It might feel like in the moment that it isn’t the “best use” of your time, but sweet Mama, YOU are a worthy use of your time and creating the time to slow down will serve you and those you love in the future.
20) Prioritize your physical health.
I know it stinks because donuts are life, but it helps.
At least more often than not: eat colorful foods (Skittles don’t count), limit sugar, limit caffeine, drink half your body weight in ounces per day of water.
21) Tidy your space, tidy your mind.
I’m a firm believer that there is a mental change that happens when you’re in a tidy space versus a cluttered one.
I have three kids so no, our house is not always clean by the traditional standard. But I make a real effort to keep it tidy as we go and do a really good clean at least weekly and I always feel so much better when my house is clean (even if it only lasts 15 minutes).
22) Check what is coming into your mind.
Social media, people, TV, environments you’re in, books, and everything in between. Are you taking in things that are joyful, positive, and things that build you up?
I used to love watching Law and Order: SVU until one day I realized that it did not make me feel encouraged in any way, shape or form. It kind of stressed me out, actually. So I stopped watching it because it didn’t build me up or bring me joy.
You are a result of your experiences and if you want your life to be a positive one, what enters your mind has to be, as well.
23) Fix your thoughts.
One of my favorite scriptures is Philippians 4:6-8 because it tells us how to have peace. It starts, “Don’t worry about everything, instead, pray about everything.” It goes on to tell us to take everything we need to God, then we will have peace that doesn’t make sense.
Verse 8 tells us to fix our thoughts on whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and on things that honor Jesus.
If it isn’t a good thing, it doesn’t bring you peace, and it doesn’t honor Jesus, the way we have peace is by giving those things to Him, thanking Him, and moving on from thinking about it.
Easy to say, harder in practice. But I can tell you from experience that it works! Give it a try and do it as many times as you need to. Sometimes I have to do it 30 times a day.
